High-profile food safety scares in the marketplace have pushed the food industry towards improvement. Change is hitting the entire industry at an unprecedented level. The major food manufacturers and distributors, as well as the largest retailers in the world such as Wal-Mart, Tesco, Delhaize, Ahold, Migros, Metro, and Carrefour, have agreed to adopt Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards. Wal-Mart and Sams Club Select, the largest U.S. grocery chain, is leading the way by becoming the first to adopt GFSI standards.
The requirement for suppliers to complete these certifications demonstrates our leadership in food safety and our commitment to global safety standards, said J.P. Suarez, Wal-Marts senior vice president and chief compliance officer, and a board member of the Global Food Safety Initiative. Food safety has always been a top priority at Wal-Mart. We are taking this additional step to ensure the integrity of our products throughout the entire food supply chain. We encourage other U.S. retailers to follow our lead and to also endorse these standards.
There are three GFSI standard for which Omnex provides training and implementation support FSSC 22000, BRC and SQF.
